The Geography Education Study Program at Sebelas Maret University in Surakarta held the 2nd International Conference on Anthropocene, Global Environmental Change and Powerful Geography (ICoAGPG) 2024. With the theme “From Crisis to Opportunity: Adapting and Mitigating to Climate Change for Sustainable Development,” this event was held via Zoom Cloud Meeting and attended by more than 200 participants from within the country and abroad.

The 2nd ICoAGPG 2024 event was held on August 10, 2024, online via Zoom Cloud Meeting. This event was officially opened by the Vice Rector for Planning, Cooperation, Business and Information, Prof. Irwan Trinugroho S.E., M.Sc., Ph.D. This event is considered to contribute to sustainable development. From his statement, the topics raised in the 2nd ICoAGPG are considered very important. Prof. Irwan believes that the contributions of the speakers and presenters in each room will showcase different scientific perspectives and new developments in the field of geography. Prof. Dr. Mardiyana, M.Si., Dean of FKIP, also expressed her appreciation to the geography education department for organizing this event. Prof. Mardiyana thanked the speakers for sharing their knowledge and expertise.

The Chair of the Organizing Committee for The 2nd ICoAGPG 2024, Dr. Rita Noviani, S.Si., M.Sc, explained in her speech that this year’s theme emphasizes the important need to shift from crisis mode to proactive opportunity seeking. In this conference, participants are expected to explore how strong geography, understanding the spatial relationships and patterns that shape our world, can drive effective climate action.

“This conference brings together leading academics, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners from various fields to share insights, strategies, and solutions for adapting to and mitigating the impacts of climate change,” said Dr. Rita Noviani, S.Si., M.Sc.

The discussions and presentations were divided into two sessions delivered by speakers in related fields.

Also attending this event was Prof. Dr. Muhammad Dimyati, M.Sc., chair of the Indonesian Geographical Association. On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Muhammad Dimyati, M.Sc. was the keynote speaker on the topic of “Spatial Data Analysis for Sustainable Development,” which was moderated by Prof. Dr. Chatarina Muryani, M.Si. In his presentation, Prof. Dimyati emphasized the importance of using remote sensing and GIS combined with AI as a complex approach called Geo AI, which can be used in disaster research in Indonesia. The results of this research can be used for policy-making. Currently, the challenge in spatial planning is related to policy-making that must consider investment on one hand and the potential for natural disasters on the other.

The first session of the 2nd ICoAGPG 2024 featured Dr. Sugiyanto, M.Si., M.Si., who raised the theme “The power of GeoCapabilities to build learners’ characters for global competitiveness and sustainability.” Dr. Sugiyanto revealed that the GeoCapabilities approach believes that individuals will be able to develop greater potential if they acquire geographical understanding, which enables them to think with a more in-depth geographical perspective.

In the second session, Dr. rer.nat. Simone Sandholz, M.Eng. from the United Nations University and Cynthia Ratih Susilo, Ph.D. from the University of Leuven were also present, moderated by Dr. rer.nat Nurhadi, S.Ant., M.Hum. Dr. rer.nat. Simone Sandholz, M.Eng. presented the theme “Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies for Climate Change.” In her presentation, she emphasized adaptive social protection to ensure and promote community resilience in facing various covariate risks, including natural and climate hazards, through the integration of social protection, climate change adaptation, and disaster risk management. The final session concluded the discussion with a presentation by the second speaker, Cynthia Ratih Susilo, Ph.D., on “mitigation and adaptation for building resilient and sustainable cities.”
